Teaching

Graduate Teaching Assistant

I was a graduate teaching assistant (TA) for two courses in the School of Integrative Biology (SIB) at UIUC, Environmental Biology (IB105) and Organismal & Evolutionary Biology (IB150). During the Fall 2016 semester, I was the co-TA for IB150 students in the Access & Achievement Program (AAP) in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Unlike traditional discussion sections, which were once a week for 1 hour, the AAP discussion sections were 2 hours and twice a week. We enhanced course materials for AAP students to facilitate learning and prepare them for the course and their undergraduate careers. We implemented skill-building workshops into our lesson plans, for example, science writing and study skills. During the Spring 2016 semester, I was the co-TA for the new Merit-AAP active learning classroom, or “i-Flex”, for IB150.

Mentoring and Supervision

Some students in the SIB Merit program were awarded scholarships. They are assigned a graduate student mentor for the entirety of their undergraduate career. I was hired as a Merit mentor in the Spring 2016 semester. My first mentee transferred to Molecular & Cellular Biology in his Sophomore year but received credits to help with my thesis research in Fall 2016 semester. I received two mentees in the Fall 2016 semester.
